If this sentence from HHFP doesn’t sum up the Oppo/Jalop mentality, I’m not sure what does. We really do have feelings about these machines, what they have meant for us and our families, thankful for the fun times and their service to us. Clearly, it’s not on the same level as a pet, but we want these inanimate objects to “live a good life” if and when they leave our homes, to be used well, taken care of, and enjoyed, not abused or neglected or left taking up space in the corner of some pristine garage.

Godspeed, little wake boat...

I’ve owned my car for 8 years now, and have had so many incredible experiences with it along the way . Driving it to work this morning, it’s just as special feeling as it was when I took it out for that first test drive. I know it’s probably not in the cards to keep this car forever , but just the thought of moving on is kind of hard. If and when it happens, I hope she goes to a good home — one where she’ll get plenty of regular exercise, one with little kids that will beg to ride in Daddy (or Mommy)‘s “ fast car” .

.

Feel free to share a story about a machine you had, or will have, similar feelings to when letting go (or alternately, one that you hated so much you wanted to send off a cliff and watch it burn to the ground - LOL).

I’m not sure I’ve felt that way about my cars or I wouldn’t sell them off. I guess maybe my neon ACR was the only one I’ve been like that with. I had to sell it to pay for my Wife’s engagement ring. But every other car I’ve sold, I was ready to move on from. As the reality of selling it sets in, I mentally distance myself from it... I always equate it to putting a pet to sleep. When you know it’s going to happening, I start to detach from them as best as I can. Same thing with the cars. But again the Neon was sold as more of a forced sale, so that the only one that really sticks with me. And I’ve been very blessed to be able to buy something more fun every time so I don’t look back too much. All that being said, I think if someone were to come along and offer me to buyback any of my old cars, I’d take them up on it, especially my first car. I would love to have that one back, just to be able to rebuild it to as perfect as I could. Nostalgia and all. I joke with my wife that if I come across a perfect example of it someday and can afford it, I’m just going to buy it without consulting her. That’s my only freebie like that.

Man, I’ve always lost my shit when putting a pet to sleep...

I’ll admit that I’m more nostalgic than most.

I think you should do a VIN search on your old ACR.

I can understand that. We always had a replacement dog within the week of losing the previous one, when I was growing up, so that helped a lot. But it’s funny how a person can distance themselves from something in those situations.

I’ll have to dig out some old paperwork with the VIN.  I should definitely do that.

I’ve been with my girlfriend for over a year now and it’s increasingly looking like we’re going to end up together for the long haul. One of the things I’ve been adamant about is any future residence having a garage for my M3. Like you, I know it’s probably not in the cards to keep forever, but I’d like to hang on to it for as long as I possibly can.

I’ve currently got this truck up for sale and having an incredibly emotional time thinking of letting it go. Worst part is to anyone but me it’s just a cheap rusty beater 4x4, so the chance of it going to a “good home” is probably slim.

Kinja'd!!!

Without writing a novel, I’ll give as short of a story as I can. Dad bought this truck when I was 10. He took me along on all of his test drives, asked me what I thought, and bought this specific truck because I loved the color of it. It felt so cool and special to do that with dad, and feel like I was involved in that decision. I grew up in the back seat of this truck, fishing trips, hunting trips, all of that fun stuff. I started driving it in highschool, and drove it all through college, and 4-5 years after. I had so much fun with this truck and have countless memories with it. I parked it about a year ago and bought a newer crew cab because it’s an old, high mileage truck, I was tired of constantly replacing parts, and I wanted more space for my new son. The intention was to fix it back up again someday but after sitting for a year, untouched and unused, I came to the sad realization that I really don’t know when that someday will be, it likely won’t ever be on the top of my priority list, and the amount of work it would take to make it right again would be monumental . So, I decided to sell it because having it sit for years on end doesn’t do it, or me, any good . The only thing that makes it a little easier is knowing that I can use the money to buy/restore a vintage truck I’ve always dreamed about and will be able to share with my kid, but it’s still really tough to even think about letting it go.

Kinja'd!!!

I also recently sold this bike, my first, and one I’ve poured tons of time and money into. It’s really the genesis of my love of motorcycles and wrenching in general. I wen t back and fourth with this one a few times before finally letting it go, but the buyer was pretty excited about it which certainly made it easier.

That is a great color... Thanks for sharing those memories with your dad . I’m reaching the point with my car where I’m needing to spend some major coin in maintenance, money that I’ll never get back if & when I do sell it. If I know I’m going to keep it for another 5-10 years, it’s no issue, but I haven’t convinced myself yet.

Glad your bike found a good caretaker.

Is your dad still alive? I think you should share these memories with him.

I’ve only ever had a couple of cars and never really had to sell any. Starting out I drove the farm truck f-150 and then eventually was passed down my mom’s 2000 dodge grand caravan. Great car for a 16-17 year old but eventually it started to have all sorts of problems, we decided to move on but it wasn’t worth selling to someone as it had way too many issues. My dad ended up taking to one of his co-workers about it and sold it to him for super cheap ($300? ). The guy stripped it down and entered it in a local demo derby where it won! I still think that is the absolute best way for that car to have ended it’s life after everything I put it through.

I dreaded selling my Magnum for a while and kept it several years longer than I ever planned. But eventually its problems were too big for me to ignore and it started to annoy me. So it definitely got to where I was glad to be done with it.

Now the mustang? Still have it, but I’m not sure what its future is anymore. I’ve always said I was going to keep it forever or until it died. Well now the c hassis is rusted pretty bad in some structurally important places. AC is still broken after spending thousands on getting it repaired 3 times now. And I’m about to move to a state that actually has inspections that will require I fix at least the exhaust holes.

I’ve had plans in the past to do a full rebuild on it. But I never had the location or money to do that much work. Then I came upon Locosts and it seemed like a great idea since the basic running components are still working! ... But the move also crushes that idea since I’ll no longer be near my In-law’s farm/shop, and I’m no longer going to be trying to buy my own place with a shop in a year or two. I’ll have a garage but I’d really prefer to park the much newer and more valuable daily drivers in there.

So for now, it mostly just sits. I drive it once a week to work and laugh at how slow it feels now.  At least it’s relatively cheap to keep going as long as I don’t try to fix the AC.

The color is my favorite part, not super rare but uncommon and it stands out. Oddly enough my new truck is black which is almost completely opposite.

To really make this thing right it really needs to at least have the body taken off the frame. It might not look like it from pictures but the box is shot and just needs replaced. The cab needs new rockers, one or two doors, and the frame could use a sand blasting to remove all the scale. etc. etc. It’s all doable work , but I don’t really have the place to do it, probably won’t for another 5 or so years, and as much as I love this truck, I’ve always put my money other places for various reasons.

Oh yeah, Dad’s still around and only lives 10 miles or so from me. T he truck is actually at his place until it sells. He’s very aware of how much I love this truck and the reasons why.

I hope the reason that my car and I part ways will not be because of some high-dollar repair that I can’t rationalize, but that’s well within the realm of possibilities. I guess, on the good side, it’s near the bottom of its depreciation curve, so I do have incentive there.

I’m glad to hear that.

Not transportation related, but we had a similar experience last week. My wife read an appeal on a neighborhood newsgroup for a toddler bed. One of the family’s little ones was up jumping on the bed at 2 am and broke it. We had two toddler sleigh bed frames in the attic from when our twins were little, so we gave them one. I located all the hardware, printed out the directions, and the dad came by and picked it up. Later that day, the mom posted a video on the group of their two little kids playing on the new bed, and said that brother’s Cars bed was no longer the coolest bed in the room. Made me smile.

I kinda miss the old ‘73 Olds green Custom Cruiser. My sister called it the green bomb and encouraged me to leave it in a bad part of town with the keys in it, but I loved it. It took us on a bunch of road trips when I was little, including our move out West with the horse trailer behind. It became my my first ride when I got my license. Lots of memories in that car. Also, the motorized gate was cooler than anything in modern days.

Kinja'd!!!

This isn’t it, but it looked much like this, although the green was faded.

I won’t let them play with the bison.

Like 20 years ago, my parents bought an old motorhome for 10 grand. It was a pretty bad purchase, as I’m sure they put about that much money into it while they owned it. Called it the [kinda rhymes with krankenwagen, but with our last name at the beginning]. I never had the joy of taking a road trip in it, but my brother’s family, along with my mom & dad, drove it all the way from Missouri to Wyoming for a family wedding near Yellowstone. It was an experience, from everything I heard. I did get to ride it in a little. Like a dozen of us piled in and toured Yellowstone in it. It was awesome! Had big windows on the side, and bison were near the road so we got some amazing views. I guess they all made it home in one piece afterward.

Thankfully they managed to sell it a few years ago. LOL

You know, I’ve never been a convertible guy, but I’m really coming around on the E46 vert. I’ve only had a couple experiences driving a convertible with the top down — once, in Germany in a Beetle convertible on some country backroads, and then in a Mustang convertible to escape our wedding reception — but I really did enjoy it. I think it often comes down to aesthetics for me (and also wanting something that’s usable on track), but the idea of a cheap, sporty convertible is becoming more and more appealing. One day...

Even though I consider myself to be a Jalop, I’m still on my first car. I’ve owned it now for... something like 11 and a half years. It has taken me some pretty crazy places (including the Bonneville salt flats). When I bought it, it had just under 80,000 km on it. Now it’s at 291 ,000 or so.  It’ll be a sad day when I let it go to a new home.

Full-size GM wagons from 1971-1976 featured a forward-facing third row. Like the earlier Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, the wheelbase was longer than the equivalent sedan to provide legroom for the third row, and the roof was raised at the rear.

Very sad to sell my wife’s custom order BMW 228i (Msport, MT, slicktop) after three years, especially in hindsight as it was such a great street car and a ray of sunshine in BMWs current lineup.

That being said it went to a wonderful home where it became a DD/track car for a man who owns an Elise, spec Boxster, 996 GT3 and BMW 135i. I almost bought the Lotus a few years later after he offered a no questions asked weekend test drive.
